The original MarlWiFi access site

With a working site-to-site bridge installed and other locals starting to express interest, we decided it was time to set up a permanent omnidirectional access point site so that multiple users accross town could join at their lesure. Russ was also getting ready to move to Christchurch so the bridge idea was rapidly grinding to a halt.

A local theatre The Marlborough Centre, kindly agreed to host the first permanent site for a Marlborough Wireless access point. We had sussed out several other locations but the Marlborough Centre’s central location and height, not to mention free hosting, was hard to beat.

Initial project

During 2002 whilst working for 1Call, I had set up several long distance (at the time) links for local businesses spanning from one to six kilometers using a variety of gear. This started off being quite experimental as IEEE 802.11b wireless gear was still very new to the market and incredibly expensive. As such, detailed information on the possibilities of such equipment was sparsely available.
