A local computer company ran a seminar on wireless security this evening and I decided to pay a visit to see what I could pick up. They covered the main points very well but ran into some serious flaws when presenting the information.

Whoa!

The new access point isn’t living up to expectations at the moment, my apoligies to everyone suffering. The latency is terrible and transfer speeds often drop to slower than exptected. I’m working on this as I type and hope to have a solution soon. So far the problem seems to be the SR2 card itself. :(

802.11g is up and running as of today. The Marlborough Centre AP has been retired after years of faithful service and replaced with a RouterBOARD 532. Some clients will need to update their gear to the new MAC address (00:15:6D:30:00:4A) to operate with the new access point.

Wireless Bandits

A local paper, the Marlborough Midweek, ran a front page article on wardriving today. I have scanned and copied the article below for your enjoyment. As far as I can tell no members were involved. I’m not so sure about the part that claims securing your connection can be difficult; most access points include a wizard to do this as the first part of setting up.

Wither Hills info and pictures

Hi everyone, just an update on the Wither Hills so I don’t get too many more people asking me directly. We have been approved by the Council to occupy the proposed Wither Hills site on the condition we have public libility insurance for $2M. While it sounds like a lot, it’s actually not too bad but has presented a small hurdle at this time.
