Warflying

This goes back to September 2004 when we had an attempt at warflying. I piloted a Cessna 172 rented from the local aero club, and along with some members we flew around Blenheim and Picton armed with a small Sharp Zaurus handheld PC. There are a few photos posted here you can view.

The results were suprising and we discovered quite a few networks. MarlWiFi showed up the moment the wheels left the ground (see photos) and we ended up finding a grand total of about 20 networks. Given the fact we didn’t have any specialised equipment; simply a Linksys 802.11b CF card this wasn’t considered too bad at the time. Interestingly enough about 60% were unencrypted.

While there wasn’t really any point in the trip except to have fun, I believe it was possibly the first of its type in NZ. We didn’t get many photos but I’ve got a few here for you to see…

The lovely ZK-PAM, the Cessna 172K Skyhawk we flew. I really should add a better photo of this plane.
Myself at the controls, Matt proudly displays his Zaurus.
MarlWiFi.org.nz shows up at the top of the list immediately after taking off.
